Dialogue of Sources

AG: The matter of fashion in college is an important issue because no matter who you are you have your own sense of style weather you believe it or not. It's a matter of how you wear your clothes and have confidence doing it. You can pull anything off with a little bit of confidence. In your opinion, how important is fashion and style in college and how can you budget for it?

O'D: Income is an important issue in college and the chance of having extra money to spend on things such as entertainment and apparel is slim. According to our chart, you will spend only 6.7% of your income on apparel. The majority of your money will be going to tuition, fees, & room and board. The average amount of money that college students get from their parents monthly is ¢312, and the average amount college students make monthly is $453. Try budgeting that into all of the extras you have to buy like food, health care, books, apparel, and electronics.

Dana: Fashion and style can be done well in college. On my website you can find fab pieces under $100. My job is to help you completely. I can find a really great dress priced around $25 and then you can plan jewelry and shoes you already have around it.

I also believe that style should be accessible to everyone – status and brand names should have nothing to do with it.

Working Hypothesis

The fact that fashion in college is necessary is evident. The fact that we all wear clothes is evident. What is also evident, is that it doesn't have to be costly, it doesn't have to be accepted by all, and you can do it in a costly manner. What I do know is that you can get great fashion pieces for cheaper at thrift stores, department stores, and knock offs. Or you can buy once expensive piece (like a pair of boots for $90) and plan items you already have around them to make a great outfit. What I want to know more about is how much students are willing to spend of fashion products and how they can budget their money wisely. The specific aspects I want to explore is budgeting and fashion in college and look into each more deeply.

Annotated Bibliography

Dana. "The Savvy Stylist: Austin Gig." Fashion Under $100. 02 Nov. 2010. Web. 02 Nov. 2010. .

-This website shows how to get fabulous looks all for under $100. People write the author and say the event they are going to and ask how to get this look for less. The author then comes up with an outfit and publishes it on this website. The author seems very credited as she receives many emails and has had her site for awhile. This source will help me with writing my paper because it talks about budgeting fashion into a low income, such as a college students and how you can still make a good outfit out of lower priced things.

"Http://www.marketingspot.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/studentincome-2009.gif." Chart. College Student Income 2009. Verocom LLC, 17 May 2009. Web. 2 Nov. 2010. .

-This is a chart showing the average costs of an average 4 year college student. The information is coming from a credited blog from a successful internet business for the past 20 years. This will help me in writing my paper because I am going to be talking about the topic of all of the expenses a college student has and how they can budget their money to make a good outfit.

Research Proposal

The topic I have chose for my final essay is fashion in college, the importance of it, and if it determines your wealth and well being. This is important to me because I have a strong interest in fashion and I have some background knowledge on it being a Fashion Merchandising major. This topic should also be important to everyone else because everyone wheres clothes, and not just that, it also covers issues like budget and finances in college and where you should focus them. This paper is going to make this community more educated on smarter spending when it comes to fashion and budgeting your money for right choices that will benefit you.

Point of Contact

The Letter I Chose:
Letter to the Editor: Fashion, worth not synonymous
Issue date: 9/22/06 Section: Opinion

I feel a little silly, because who writes a letter to the editor about the fashion column, right? Apparently I do. Anyway, as I read through the column, I was a little dismayed with the ridiculous price-tags that came with much of the clothing recommended.

However, I viewed that as one of those instances in which I am better off just muttering to myself or ranting to my roommate about my opinion on the issue instead of making it publicly known. Even though I personally am shocked at the thought of spending $90 on a pair of pajama pants, I realize that it is really a pretty trivial thing to get upset about. What made me more than a little disgusted was the derogatory comment about -state school girls.'

Although I myself am not a huge fan of velour, I realize that female students do not necessarily have bad fashion sense just because they can%t afford to go to a private school. Duh.

I also think it is important to be aware that just because someone attends DePauw does not mean that they can afford it. I personally would be one of those -state school girls' or even a community college girl scoffed at in the column if it were not for the fact that scholarships allow me to attend DePauw for $64 a year. But that does not mean I would be wearing velour, and if I did, so what? I know a lot of people with what would probably be considered especially by our elitist fashion columnist a bad sense of fashion, who are of much more substance and who I respect much more than some well-dressed people I know.

I understand that fashion is really important to some people and that is fine, but it is also fine to find other things more important, like learning about or fighting world hunger. Besides, it is certainly possible to effectively share your opinions and make recommendations without making fun of people. And shouldn%t a writer with a private-school education be capable of that?

Britani Hollis,

sophomore

I chose this letter because this argument interests me because Fashion Merchandising is my major so it is something that I deal with in my everyday life. I agree with this letter because I do think that just because you are in college and interested in Fashion doesn't mean you should be wearing a real Chanel piece or a wonderful Oscar de la Renta gown. You can still have good style with the pieces you choose, maybe from a thrift store or from a department store that you can afford. Just because you don't have these elaborate pieces doesn't mean that you are poor or not a good person, it means that you are a college student just like everyone else around you and you don't have a lot of money. You can potentially after college get these pieces if you can afford them or still have the desire to have them. Looking at this letter, I think the only thing I would change is this girls sort of aggression towards the subject. She seems to be very upset, which is fine, but you can't expect every retailer to conform to the typical college student's budget. I think it would be better for her if she had a more calm, open-opinion tone. It would not only make her argument more likable, but also seem more intelligent and educated on the subject. She could also elaborate more on how college students can make their statement look with a lower budget.

Appraising the Letter:
Her main claim is that just because you don't wear top of the line clothes doesn't mean that you are an uneducated or poor person. Her main support is that she can still attend college with scholarships and "wear velour if she wants to." The writer doesn't really touch much on opposing claims, which is where I step in and make some. The writer, in my opinion, gets her point across and defines the issue correctly.

Summary:
In the letter, Britani Hollis talks about the topic of fashion in college and being able to afford expensive items as a college student. She argues that just because you aren't in a private school doesn't mean that you have a bad fashion sense or can't afford to buy expensive pieces. I agree with what Britani says, and I think that she can add to her statement by saying that you can still look fabulous in college with lower priced items and spending more money on one statement piece an plan the outfit around that accordingly. Also, as a college student, you aren't expected to have a Chanel bag or an Oscar de la Renta gown. You can still look good and have a sense of style with lower priced clothing and some sort of a fashion sense.

To look for the perfect topic numbers 1 and 3 helped me the most. Number 1, looking inward made me think about what topics interested me most. One of the main topics that I am dealing with every day, not only in classes, but in my free time is Fashion. Being a Fashion Merchandising major really helps me get insight on this topic. Number 3, use creative visualization helped me to confirm my topic. The book tells you to imagine you are at a party overhearing someone talk about a topic or someone else overhears you and compels you to talk to one another. I recently met a new friend, Emily, at a party simply because I had a Chanel purse on that she also had and loves. She stopped me because I was wearing the purse and we chatted about the purse and other fashion topics for the rest of the night. At a glance really helped me to confirm my topic and further my fashion knowledge.

Letter to the Editor

The letter to the editor i read was discussing the issue of voting to keep the use of coal. I agree and disagree with this person. I think that coal is definitely necessary(for now), but I think we should take use of the alternative ways of producing electricity. I think solar panels are a great, energy efficient way to produce electricity and that we should possibly get some funding for this from the Governor or other higher-ups. This would in the long term help everyone out, even the Earth.

Halloween Writing

Informal: (For)
Halloween is the Heart and Soul of Athens. If we didn't have it, the spirit throughout the whole month of October would be gone. I can't even imagine what it would be like. This is not only a university event, but a whole community event. It brings the city together to share the festivities in a fun and light-hearted way. Not many other cities or schools have such an elaborate event and it is truly what makes OU and Athens special.

Formal: (Against)
Halloween in Athens is a disgrace. It is an insult to the rich history of the city and destroys the integrity of Athens. The foul language and inappropriate attire should be eliminated. Court Street should remain open during the Halloween weekend and police should disperse of large gatherings. Eliminating the Halloween block party will restore order and good values.

Prewriting Checklist

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXHIeeLesKs

Topic:5 Hour Energy Shots, 2:30 feeling

Story: The main character is talking about how 5 hour energy shots make you feel more energized and are better for you than other drinks like coffee.

Audience: This first appeared on television in America.

Argument: This ad is telling you that 5 hour energy shots are better than coffee or other energy drinks because it contains no sugar and there is no crash afterward. Also, that it lasts 5 hours.

Composition: This is a commercial.

Word and Image: Word and image are both used and completely rely on one another.

Imagery: The actors in the video seem to be normal people in an office and not actors. This makes you feel like you can relate to them more and makes it more believable.

Tone: This commercial is in a serious tone which makes the company look like they know what they are talking about.

Character and Setting: The main character is a male, who has a good speaking voice and keeps you with the scenes behind him moving from one person to the next. They represent actual people.

Cultural Responses: This commercial is set in an office which may make you think that you only have to have an office job to take this product or might portray to them more.

Question #3 Image

Hines is right, people do go see places because of the magnificent images or things they have heard about it, but is it as great as they thought it would be? This summer my mom and I went to Asheville, North Carolina to tour the Biltmore Estate which is just a really huge house that this really rich guy owned. When my mom first told me about it and showed me the pictures I didn't think it was going to be all that great, but I went because she wanted me to. I am now really glad that I went. The house itself and the amazing scenery that surrounded it was absolutley amazing. It was literally breathtaking. I could've stayed there for a month. The moment I remember most is we were sitting outside with our feet in the hot tub and all you could see were mountains and at that moment that was the only thing I ever wanted to see again. Being there in the moment was a better experience than the pictures themselves for me. If I could, I would go back now.

Creative Practice

The Listerine ad definitely relies on pathos. In the first paragraph where the two women are talking about why he is already "done for" you can see that they are trying to make you feel like if you don't use this product before you leave the house then you are romantically done for and make you feel like you need the unnecessary product. Especially by the way they say "this sort of thing happens and usually does when people are careless about unpleasant breath". Then in the second paragraph they start by asking the question are you guilty? which immediately makes you remember all the times you didn't use this product and should have and makes you wonder what all your peers were thinking about you. Then they close by saying just do it for the benefit of others and how great, fresh breath can last for hours if you use their product, which again is making you feel that you need to buy it. The ad is also relying on lothos (logic) because they are saying that it is just plain logical to use this product. I think the copywriter chose those rhetorical strategies because it really can put you into the situation the man is in and make you think of all the times that could have been you and really makes you feel like it is logical to always use that product, why not?

Chapter Preview Questions

A couple examples of specific strategies that can be used for persuasion are cause and effect which demonstrates the benefits of using the product and classification and division which helps the reader coceptualize how the product fits into a larger scheme. Logos plays with persuasion by using a rational argument. Pathos is used by bringing out emotions, and Ethos is using reasoning to build authority. If you were to exaggerate these, you can better enforce your message and make your reader feel what you are feeling. For example, if you were to exaggerate something dealing with pathos (emotions) you might make your reader relate to something that has happened in their life and then that might make them feel more compassionate about your advertisement and want to contribute or buy it.
Knowing context can create a better argument because you will know more information about the background which makes it easier to form a persuasive argument.
When writing papers or essays I could use strategies of persuasion by looking at each strategy and see if it applies to my writing. I can use them to form a stronger argument.

Logo Response #4

We are surrounded by logos each and every day. They are lurking in our subconscious minds. We may see them and just look away, but really they mean something to us. Companies put logos on clothes you wear not only so you can show your peers what you are wearing, but also for advertising purposes. Being a retail major I am surrounded by them daily. Not only from my fellow retail friends who talk about the next big designer or who made their shirt, but also in my emails I get. Who What Wear Daily is just one email i get that shows me "What she was wearing". It shows you a picture of the celebrity and what designers they are wearing. It also shows you how you can get the look for less. This is only one of the emails I get daily and they all are conveying the message of different name brands and how important they are.

Cartoon and Prewriting Checklist

Topic: Technology replacing older forms of information.

Story: A student is asking another student how to operate a book.

Audience: This cartoon was produced in the USA and it is current. This cartoon appeared Online.  This text is moderate, because media is supposed to be non biased. Cagle has a range of cartoons with different views so this cartoon speaks to a variety of people.

Author:  Mike Keefe lives and publishes in Denver for The Denver Post. Based on the few cartoons Ive seen he mainly creates social commentary cartoons. Mike also writes books.

Argument: The cartoons message about the issue of technology is not negative, it is simply saying that often kids are mainly exposed to computers and do not often read books. The ironic part of the cartoon is that the boy expects this foreign object to turn on when it's only a book.

Composition: The cartoon is a single frame.

Word and Image: The word and image are both used in this cartoon and rely on each other because without the visual the question posed would not be out of the ordinary. But, when combined with the visual it creates the message. Both the text and visual have equal priority.

Imagery: The artist chooses cartoon imagery of students in a class. He refers to old technology and new technology to make his point.

Tone: This cartoon is comic. The tone makes the subject seem silly to show that it is outlandish for kids to not know what books are.

Character and Setting: This cartoon is composed to 2 main characters in a classroom setting. Both characters are white, school aged, middle class, and male. They are fictional creations. The make up of the class represents the make up of the U.S.

Cultural Resonance: The cartoon explicitly refers to the popularity of personal advanced technology. There is no symbolism, its actual subjects are in the cartoon. The cartoon deals with popular objects that everyone can relate to.

Rhetoric in my Day

As I step out of my front door and make my way down the alley I look down and see an old Parliment cigerette pack, a crushed Bud Light can, and a crumbled piece of paper where all I can make out of it is some ad for Subway. I look up and see The Crystal and to the left and right of me is graffiti pasting the walls that I walk by everyday. I make it to Court St. after tripping on an old Quiznos cup, I felt like it was calling to me saying drink me!! I turn right on Court St. as I head to College Bookstore..only a few more blocks to go. I look at the car parked next to me and I see that it has a U.S. Army bumper sticker. I keep heading for the bank, trying to not get too distracted by all the rhetoric. I never realized how much there was around me. As I make my way past the Chinese restaurant I see a Kid Cudi poster. It seems that he is coming to Columbus sometime soon. Also, I see a Bluegrass BBQ poster and I think, hmm that could be interesting. As I cross the crosswalk and make my way closer to the bookstore I see that Chase bank has about a million flyers that I haven't even paid attention to before. Some add about joining an organization and others for Dance or Die at the Union. I keep walking and pass Chipotle, a smell like no other, it just pulls me in every time I walk past. Finally, I make it to the bookstore and I see they are renting textbooks on the sign outside and that you can save 50% or more. Good deal, I think as I make my way downstairs to the Art Supplies.

I never realized that I could be distracted by so many things if you just stop and look for a minute and not be in such a hurry. A five minute walk turned into a 20 minute one but it wasn't a bad thing. I got to see and learn about so many new things that I didn't even realize surrounded me.

What is Art?

Art is probably one of the hardest things to define, but if I would have to define it, I would say that it is anything that causes someone to think about it, create an emotion, or simply appreciate it.

Some behaviors that are associated with art are emotion, thinking, taking it in, feelings, appreciation and imagination. When dealing with art, any and every emotion is possible. Art can make you feel happy, sad, curious, or guilty. It's amazing to me that looking at something can make you feel so strongly about it and sometimes you don't even know why. When looking at art you might have to take some time to take it in. You might not understand what the artist is trying to communicate, if they are trying to say anything at all, but appreciation might not come right away.

There are many responsibilities that come with art. One of the main responsibilities, in my opinion, is to preserve the art that is already around you. Future generations will appreciate it and so will you. Also, you need to give art a chance. You don't have to always like it, but you should at least try it out and understand the concept or message, if there is one. Lastly, you should try something of your own. It will feel good after you're done to have something that you made to your name. And you never know, you may actually be a really good artist.

The hidden role that art plays in life, is that it affects each and every one of us every single day whether you know it or not. It could be in a classroom, at work, or just walking to Ping. The architecture that surrounds us everyday isn't even half of the art that affects us. Daily, you could see hundreds of different pieces of art and not even realize it. So next time you're just sitting in a room or walking down a street, look around and appreciate all the art that surrounds you.
